Where it comes from

A direct structural carry-over: Irish places 'mar sin' and similar closers at the end of the clause, and Hiberno-English put 'so' in the same slot. Standard English has no equivalent position for it, which is why the usage sounds odd to outsiders rather than merely unfamiliar.
