A Japanese slang term. Browse all Japanese slang.

What it means

  1. Sluggish, heavy-limbed, drained — the physical feeling of a fever coming on or of four hours' sleep.

  2. Of a task or a person: a drag, too much effort to deal with.

Examples with translations

  • 今日はなんか体がだるい。

My body feels like lead today.

  • 明日の会議、まじだるい。

Tomorrow's meeting is going to be such a slog.

Where it comes from

From classical 怠し (darushi), 'languid'. The physical sense is standard Japanese; the 'this is tedious' extension is what makes the modern usage slang.
