bonche

BON-chehnounDated

A Dominican Spanish slang term. Browse all Dominican slang.

What it means

  1. A party or a night out. Perfectly comprehensible to everyone but now clearly the older generation's word — a Dominican under twenty-five says teteo or coro and hears bonche as something their parents say.

  2. The verb bonchar survives slightly better than the noun, mostly in the phrase 'salir a bonchar'.

Examples with translations

  • Eso' tienen un bonche to' lo' sábado'.

That lot have a party going every Saturday.

  • Nos fuimos a bonchar hasta la' cinco.

We were out partying until five.

Where it comes from

From English 'bunch', in the sense of a bunch of people. Entered Caribbean Spanish in the mid-twentieth century and is still fully current in Venezuela, which is worth knowing before assuming it is dated everywhere.

First attested: mid-20th century
