   Banter; loud, joking, teasing talk among a group. A chercha is a conversation whose purpose is the noise it makes, not the information in it.

   The verb cherchar is to take part in it, and 'estar en chercha' is to be in the middle of one — which is also a polite excuse for not having done any work.

Where it comes from

Origin uncertain. A derivation from English 'church', by way of the noise of a congregation, is sometimes offered and is not well supported. The word is shared with Puerto Rican and Venezuelan Spanish.
