What it means

  1. A drag, a bore, a thing you cannot face doing. '¡Qué mamera!' is the standard Colombian groan at an unwelcome task.

  2. The state of being fed up: 'me da mamera' is 'I can't be bothered'.

Where it comes from

From mamar, which in Colombian idiom underlies a whole family of exhaustion words — estar mamado, 'to be worn out', and mamar gallo, 'to mess about, to stall'. The literal sense of mamar is 'to suckle'; the crude reading exists but plays no part here, and mamera is said freely in front of parents. Jartera is the Antioquian equivalent.
