toque
TOOKnounColloquial
A Canadian English slang term. Browse all Canadian slang.
What it means
A knitted winter hat. Called a beanie in the US and Australia and a woolly hat in Britain, but in Canada it is simply the word for the object.
In use
Grab a toque, it's minus twenty out there.
He wears that toque year-round.
Where it comes from
From Canadian French tuque, itself from an older French word for a brimless cap. One of the clearest cases of a French borrowing that English-speaking Canadians use without any sense of it being foreign.
