What it means

   Tacky, naff, corny. Of clothes, music, a chat-up line or a party — anything that is trying to be stylish and failing.

2. 2.

   Of a person, unsophisticated in a slightly pitiable way. Gentler than comemierda, which accuses you of arrogance; cheo only accuses you of bad taste.

Where it comes from

Of uncertain origin; usually connected to Cheo, the familiar form of the name José, as a stock name for an ordinary, unpolished man — the same device that produced 'a right Wally' in British English. The superlative cheísimo is very common.
