охуеть (okhuyet)

What it means

1. 1.

   To be completely floored by something. As a bare interjection, охуеть is 'holy shit' — and, like the English, it works for the magnificent and the appalling alike.

2. 2.

   In the second person it accuses: ты охуел? is 'have you lost your mind?', said to someone who has overstepped badly.

3. 3.

   The adjective охуенный derived from it is straightforwardly positive — 'fucking brilliant' — which catches out learners who assume anything from this root must be an insult.

  Note: Confrontational. This is the line before a fight, not a joke between friends.

Where it comes from

The prefix о- (denoting a change of state, as in оглохнуть 'to go deaf') on the root хуй. The pattern is regular: the mat roots take ordinary Russian prefixes and suffixes and behave like any other verb.
